Business Networking-Utilizing Your Local Community

When you own and operate your own business, even if it is an online business, you can expect to have to do some networking if you want it to reach it’s full potential, and earn you a decent profit. For those of you who aren’t familiar with business networking, basically business networking just means getting out there and letting people know that your business exists, and what it is all about, sort of like doing your own advertising campaign, just on a smaller scale. You don’t want to waste your networking efforts on people who likely have no need for your business or the products that you feature, so try to target people that would have an interest in your business and what you can offer them, or those people that might be able to send other customers your way. The crucial element in business networking is people skills, and using those skills to get to know other people in your area, who may be able to help you expand and grow your business, either by becoming a customer, or referring your business to other potential customers. If you run a brick and mortar business, your best networking efforts will be spent in talking with other local business owners in your area.

When you really sit down and think about the business networking opportunities around you, you may be surprised at just how many there actually are. A good place to start is by joining your local Chamber of Commerce, and taking the time to become a member of local clubs and organizations as well. All of the people in those clubs that you meet and talk to about your business instantly become a part of your business network.

When you meet people that could be an integral part of your business network, it is imperative that you make a good first impression. You will want to talk about your business, and topics along the same lines, so that you can impress upon this new contact just how devoted you are to growing and expanding your business and the needs of the community. If a subject comes up during conversation that you are not completely familiar with, don’t be afraid to ask questions, so that you can gain more information and become part of the conversation. Sure, you can still be in the conversation by just listening to what the other participants have to say, but you want to make a good impression, so you need to show that you are interested in the discussion by participating in some way, which can be difficult if you aren’t familiar with the topic being discussed.

You shouldn’t stop trying to build your business network, and should always be looking for new contacts. Set a goal to make at least one new business contact per day, or per week, and then tweak that goal as needed to make it more challenging. Don’t forget that your customers are the key to your success, so the better you treat them and let them know just how important they are; the more your business will profit and grow.
